Sorry for the misspelling in the heading. It's Goldgrube with a "b", not a "v".
Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany
A.P.# 2 576 801 03-04
Long cork that nearly broke in the middle but came out clean with a nice pop.
The wine is somewhat a Champagne color. Floral and stone fruit nose. Nice ripeness/acidic balance but not as crisp and focused as some other vintages. Stone fruits and pear syrup on the palate. It went down so smoothly that the second evening I gulped about a 3-ounce pour without any thought at all. I then slowed down on the second pour to savor it a bit. It's in a good place now.
I had it with broccoli-stuffed chicken breast and potato pancakes. Thank you, Mike.

make me want to open one you are right, the 03 was definitely less focused due to the vintage but made one of the endearing characteristics of Vollenweider (it's focus) very hidden from view.

Opened one last night and under the cap was a big mold growth. cleaned off and pulled cork that was mostly soaked through... thought I had a bottle to throw away.

Wine poured out light golden with hint of green, turned out to be wonderful, same consistent notes as WoW.

I think it's a cork issue, Engineer. A moldy cork doesn't always spell disaster though as you discovered.

RE: 2003 Vollenweider Wolfer Goldgruve Riesling Spatlese
This wine is immortal. This thing simply has not moved since bottling. I wish I had more cases to follow it and might need to hide the rest. I was told that the Mags Auslese in Gold Kapsel are insane and I have a couple. I'm gonna hide those....
