Just wondering what bottles got popped at New Years and what the surprises and dissapointments were. We went from a half bottle of Gaston Chicquet Cuvee Traditional to a half bottle of Margaine Brut to a half bottle of Krug. Worked for me!

Cheers, Roberto

Roberto,

Bowing to my wife's tastes, we started with a Bruno Paillard Brut Premier Cuvee and finished with a '91 Vilmart Couer de Cuvee. Both were excellent and a great way to end one year and start the next. We had a Pol Roger Brut with brunch while watching the Rose Parade. Fortunately, I talked our guests out making Mimosas with the Pol Roger.

1995 Huet Vouvray Petillant. Excellent stuff, a bit more fruit driven than Champagne, with the mineral notes of the Loire. Even at full OR retail of $23, it's well priced.

My wife and I had the Pol Roger Brut. I enjoy the rich toasty middle, although I thought the finish was a little disjointed. I don't remember this in the last bottle I had and maybe my palate was just cranky that evening. The wife was completely pleased with the wine. We would have opened something more expensive but that would have been a waste when you are trapped home on New Years Eve with a group of six 13 year old girls having a sleep-over party. Down went the ball and out went 6 cans of silly string all over the room.

1988 Taittenger Millesime - very seductive followed by an '82 Taittenger Comte and at midnight a '69 Krug.
