I couldn't pass up a bottle of Penescal sauvignon blanc for $6.99. Earlier I'd tried their temperanillo for the same price, and found it to be a nice quaffer, good for burgers, pizza, etc.

The SB was ok. A very light straw in color, it basically was a one-note wine: grapefruit on the nose, on the palate, and, briefly, on the finish. It neither had the opulent tropical fruit of a New Zealand SB, nor the minerally crispness of a good Loire SB.

My wife compared it to a wine cooler, but I think that is a bit harsh.

This was the first Spanish white I've tried, so I have no idea how representative this one is.

I doubt it is representative of the best. Look for Albarino--a varietal produced in Galicia. Even ww would like it. I love it.

I've been buying up some delicious albarino lately, particularly the Martin Codax brand, but there seem to be quite a few around. Let us know what you get and what you think about it (and since you're in Mke, let me know where you got it!).

Thanks for the tips on Albarino; I'll definitely look for some. Now that it's warming up (finally), I'm jonesing for some good whites!
