Two QPR'S

Had the opportunity to sample the following two Spaniards yesterday

2006 Borsao Campo de Borja. Medium bodied with rich, dark, sweet red blend of 75% Garnacha and 25% Tempranillo. Framed with fine, dusty tannins. Terrific $6 wine by the case. 14% Alc/vol.

2006 Senorio de Barahonda Carro Tinto - Deeper and more full bodied than the Borsao this wine is 50% monastrell, 20% syrah, 20% tempranillo and 10% merlot with deep, ripe fruit, dark chocolate and tobacco notes. This unoaked blend is rustic in style and a nice, cheap go to wine to stock up on. $8 by the case. 14.5% Alc/vol.

Agree with your notes on these QPR gems. In the past, we've had a lot of the Borsao, but the '06 seems just a bit more sweet than past vintages. Thus, I'm preferring the Carro right now -- nice rusticity, and a good foil for a wide range of winter foods. Both are great values, however, and offer nice consistency from year to year.

Can't beat that Borsao, it's in the regular rotation here. I quit telling my friend what a good deal it is...they seem to like it better when they think it's $12 - $15 a bottle.

Was a foregone conclusion that iffin this sucker be enny good the mity Drewski had posted on it. As soon as I had me first taste Icame here and sure-'nuff there it be...Borsao...Just finished the bottle for lunch and called the club for 2 boxes. Picked up a 2007 Borsao Campo de Borja that I spied in a wine shop for the stupid price of $8.99 but it's the only place I've seen the '07 so I bought it for scientific reasons. Medium bodied and more deeply flavored than the 2006 with rich, dark spicy berry flavors with hints of tar. Still 75% Garnacha and 25% Tempranillo. 14% Alc/vol.
This shop, btw, was selling the Tres Picos garnacha for $20 a bottle. Someone needs to tell them we're in a recession!

Drew, The $20 for the Tres Picos isn't far off what it's going for now. We have it at $17, which is a far cry from the $9 it was just a few years ago. The Borsao seems to have taken a big jump recently, as well. $8.99 is what we would charge now with the standard markup. I'll have to ask Jorge Ordonez about that the next time he comes in, though I suspect it probably has something to do with the way the dollar tanked against the Euro. Two years ago the Euro was worth about 67 cents, and now it's up to about 79 cents.

The Tres Picos is running $14.99 up here right now.

KC, I may be wrong but I think you have it backwards. The dollor was worth .67 of a Euro, and has risen to .79 lately.
