can someone advise which of this two ports would be better for ending a New Years eve dinner party. 1977 Offley or Sandeman. We are also having Yquem so I want to open only one of the ports.

Both of these Ports are fully mature and ready to drink. Both are about of equal quality -- it is a toss-up.

I would have to agree with Bucko that the quality is pretty equal although they are VERY different in style. If I had to choose though, I would go with the Offley which in 1977 did make a slightly better Porto than the Sandeman. The Offley usually matures quicker and is very ready to drink now. The Sandeman is a simpler wine but probably will last longer as it has more tannic structure.
