Usually once the wine is open I store in upright (recorked) in the refrigerator. You don't need to worry about keeping the cork moist once you've opened the wine. Something like a 10-year Port will keep a couple weeks after opening and most open wines will deteriorate after two to four days anyway so no point in trying to keep the cork moist. That's more for storage prior to opening.

I miss the pop of the cork but prefer screw caps to ruined wines. Some artificial corks are better than others (but the long-term effects of using artificial corks are still under study). I've met several employees from a Raleigh-area firm that manufactures artificial corks. They are trying to interest Banfi in testing them.
