ww, one night back in the eighties we went to catch Anita O'Day at our then favorite jazz club in Manhattan--Marty's. Turned out that Marty was a jerk and a coke head. He reneged on Anita's contract and so she walked off the stage mid-way through the show. But that first half was worth the price of admission and more.

I have seen her a num bert of times--the last was just a couple of months ago at the Blue Note in Manhattan. At 80 plus she has a little trouble but she made the second act sound exactly like a second act. She refers to herself as a song stylist, not a singer; she has a point but only a small one.

As for Sarah--nobody did or does it better. What she did with octaves most other singers can only wish for. And the velvet sexiness of the lady's voice sends tingles through this old body.
