Hi Liz. You answered some of your own questions. Much of what happens to wine happens in the vineyard. Harvests will vary from vintage to vintage, and some grapes just don't do well in some areas.

In your region whites seem to do better than reds generally speaking. There as some exceptions as you know.

Also wineries in your area depend to a very large degree to their tasting room business. This is true to other regions as well, for example the Finger Lakes. In order to get people into their tasting rooms they have to offer a wide variety wines. This will almost always include some that they are not that good at.

Also keep in mind that ones mans fancy is another mans whatever. Some people may like the wines you don't like.
