Actually the best way is probably to go with a pen and a note pad to a winery that offers free, or a very cheap tasting when you can. That's my view anyway. Mark down notes on what you like, and what you didn't. I realized I didn't like (young) Cab's from the start, just from going over my notes. I have yet to find out if I like aged Cabs better, but for now Merlot, Zin, Viognier, Syrah, Port and Muscat's remain consistently myy favorites. I am still looking for that first Pinot and Cab that I can enjoy.
