How long to store wines?

I have some bottles of wine that I've brought with me from France - mostly Bordeaux. I'm curious to know when these wines will be at their best - can anyone help me out?

I've poked around a bit on the boards here and if I understand correctly, then it's going to depend on the quality of each individual wine as well as the storage of the bottles - is this correct? Anything to add to this?

How would I go about judging the lifetime of my bottles then? I guess I could post a list to a board here, but is there some other resource for checking up on these?
