I've not read anything against Vinotemp. But keep in mind that a free-standing unit will exhaust into the room, raising the room's temperature somewhat; and the fan will run continuously, the compressor intermittently, generating a low-level but persistent "noise floor" in the house that some people might find objectionable.

Since you're in the Bay Area, you probably don't need to worry about high summer temperatures, like we contend with in South Texas; those conditions drove me a couple of years ago to choose a EuroCave 260 with "extreme" option, so it could be installed in our garage. It was the only unit I could find that was designed to survive in 90 degree plus temperatures.

So long as the room in which your unit will be installed reaches a temperature no higher than about 77 degrees, the Vinotemp should be able to maintain 57 degrees for optimum wine storage.
