Liquor laws make for strange bed fellows in the sunny Southland. There are coalitions of religious fundamentalists and business interests.

When I was in college in Mississippi, one could buy liquor and wine in bars and liquor stores, but we had to drive to the next county to buy and drink beer -- and how many college kids wrecked between college and "The Crossroads" beer joints?

The churches joined with the beer sellers in the next county to keep beer sales out of the county the university was in. But we always figured some of the deacons also owned some of the beer joints.

I'd love to know how wine made the transition from sacrament to the bane of Baptists.
