If kept past their individual "shelf lives" they lose usefulness quickly.

One way to keep wine a little better: Get and keep a half bottle (375 ml) preferably a screw top. When you open a new full size bottle, fill up the half bottle to the top and rescrew or recork. This will eliminate excess oxygen almost completely, and better than most mechanical systems. You can keep almost any wine up to week in the fridge this way.
