I would try wines from south of France - Vin d'pay area. You can't go wrong with the price and the quality is decent. You can go with Merlot, Cabernet or Syrah for reds or Chardonnay for the white.

Innkeeper, I'm going to agree with you with the unoaked whites. Espcically since she is in Scotland. I'll bet you they dont' like over oaked whites.
