I believe that it was Shakespeare (or John Donne) who first suggested the image: "You're so contagious, I can't take it."

I know that Shelley used it in one of his later poems, but just can't remember the original source.

And in Burton's original translation of the Rubyyat, he actually stated: "A loaf of bread, a jug of Pimp Juice, and you."
