What I did, till I got used to being able to feel the temp with my hands, is buy a cheap digital meat thermometer. Make sure it has a range that goes down into the teens or lower. Mine is -40 on up...

Its got a long metal probe which is perfect for sticking down the neck of a newly opened wine bottle. Within a few seconds you will have your reading. Simple, cheap, accurate.
