My best advice is to attend a tasting that has a wide variety of wines and take your notebook. You'll get exposed to many wines, take notes as far as what you liked and why and if you don't like a particular wine, you are not "stuck" with a whole bottle. Then come back and buy the ones you liked. Don't limit yourself to just the "sweet" wines when you taste. You may find that you'll like some that aren't as sweet as your taste preferences evolve.
