Hi winequest, welcome to the board. Sounds like a Beaujolais Villages (France)could fill the bill for about $8. You may want to buy a bottle and try it at home instead of buying something for the first time in a restaurant. While you're at it, consider picking up a lambrusco or even a bardolino. Both of those are Italian wines. Have fun experimenting.
