Hi LI Newbie, and welcome to the Wine Board. Right now the best book to get started wine is "Great Wine Made Simple" by Andrea Immer (Robinson) who resides where you live the last time I looked.

I grew up on L.I. myself and therefore go back from time to time to visit family and friends. We usually take the New London to Orient Point ferry, and then head west. This gives us an opportunity to visit the wineries along the way.

My impression of L.I. wineries is that they are nice and nice to visit, but their product is expensive for what you get.

I much prefer the wines from the Finger Lakes region. You should be able to find them in wine stores where you live. They do a particularly good job with Riesling, by also do well with Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, sparkling wine, and various red and white blends.
