You could get him a few bottles and make it a global theme.

Shiraz from Australia, Cab from California and Chianti from Italy.

None of these will be overtly fruity.

Here in Chicago for just under $15 you can get:

Beringer Napa Cabernet
Chateau St. Jean Cabernet
Rodney Strong Cabernet

Penfolds Hyland Shiraz
Peter Lehman Shiraz
Greg Norman Limestone Shiraz

Borgo Scopetto Chianti
Castello Banfi Chianti Classico Reserva
Castello Monsanto Chianti Classico Reserva

You can have a lot of fun with it and he will too! You can also print out the history of the wine and food pairings. All found on the net.
