Yeah and when I read the original question, even before I read all of your answers, my reply was to be an inexpensive Rioja........

I mean, come one, that is what is used for the Sangria that is served on the streets of such places as Barcelona. If it is good enough for the Spanish, it ought to be good enough for us!!

But you have to ditch the recipe. Use fresh fruits. Use oranges (blood oranges if you can get them), pineapple, cherries, plums, lemons and maybe even some limes. The natural sugars in the fruit should be enough for sweetness, unless you really want a super-sweet drink; then and only then, add some sugar.

Slice up the fruit, retain the juices, add the fruit slices and the juices to a large container and pour in the wine. Refrigerate over-night and serve the next day. It is not even inappropriate to serve it in high-boys with some ice cubes.
