In addition to the Andrea Immer book, "Great Wines Made Simple," you might benefit from the book (and don't take offense at the title) "Wine for Dummies." It's a good introduction to the wine world and I still refer to it from time to time although I have been drinking wine for a number of years. Stacey is correct about finding a wine shop that offers free or inexpensive tastings and that has knowledgeable staff.
