I have not had this particular Gallo Merlot, but I'll venture a pretty solid guess that the wine was dry.

It may have been fruit forward with minimal tannins. That would have given you the perception of a sweet wine because of the flavor of the fruit in the wine.

Now I'll have to go out to the local grocery store, see if I can find a bottle and give it a taste to see if my guess is correct.
