You should get a copy of Andrea Immer's book "Great Wine Made Simple" for this and many other reasons. It is available in hard back, paperback, and used editions at any major brick and morter or on-line book store.

Another, somewhat more advanced guide, is Michael Schuster's "Essential Winetasting." I have had my copy for several years, but know it is still in print because they have it at a local wine shop here. In addition to beginning and advanced tasting techniques, he gives an excellent rundown on the world's wine grapes, and wines, including maps of major regions. I consult it regularly.
