Hi Mz

I agree with the InnKeeper on starting with a shiraz or a rhone. Being that they tend to be a little more fruity and lighter tasting for a beginning wine drinker.

Also if drinking at home, red wines may be more convienent as you don't have to keep it chilled. Set the bottle next to where you are relaxing so you don't have to keep getting up to get a glass. (Reds are better at room temp 62 to 65 F). If you prefer white wines then you may consider purchasing a wine bucket to keep it chilled or you will be jumping up and running to the fridge everytime you want a glass of wine.

Experiment with the Pinot Noirs and Merlots also.Your local wine or grocery store should have plenty of inexpensive ones to try until you develope a taste of your own.
