Welcome to the board. Both reds and whites should be stored at the same temperature: 55-57F. Serving temps are usually different, but not storage temp.

As to the length of time a wine may be stored unopened before it begins to lose its desirable characteristics: that really varies greatly from one grape variety to another, and even among bottlings from a single producer.
