Many California Rieslings are very nice. More difficult to find are Chenin Blanc. In both cases just be that it does not say "Dry" on the label. There are some nice Muscats (or Muscatos), but you have to be careful. Some are just too sweet either for quaffing or with food.

Quality in a sweet red wine is hard to find in California. It is possible east of the Rockies where most wineries will produce wines of varying sweetness, and, of course, in Italy. Most sweet California reds are plonk.
