Storing open wine....

As a follow up to my earlier question, what is the best way to store an open bottle of wine after only a glass or two is taken out? I have seen some put it back in the wine rack and some just stand it up.

Also, what is the purpose of storing wine in a rack that tilts it down toward the cork? There has to be a reason. I am just curious.
