Hi Alecjohn, and welcome to the Wine Board. Sometimes the simplest questions are the hardest to answer. The problem is subjectivity versus objectivity. Also there is the time differential. Just as a wine evaluator in 1855 could not evaluate a wine in 2001, the reverse is as true.

There are many sites on the net that provide vintage information such as www.winespectator.com . There are also voluminous encyclopedias on wine, which are best perused in a well stocked library.

If you have specific questions about specific vintages and specific wines you should be able to get a better answer here.
