Try Beaujolais-Villages for a red wine.

Try (oh heaven forbid I'd ever suggest this) White Zinfandel.

Or, for another white, try German Riesling.

Any of these might be good for a wine beginner, in my humble opinion. Also would suggest that you go to your nearest wine store and talk to the staff there. If they are worth their salt they will help you select some wines you might like.
