If you are fortunate enough to have a cellar or basement, in Up State NY, all you have to do is move your racks downstairs. This is know as passive storage. If you are in an apartment or a house on a slab, you need an active unit. As you say there is a lot of information on this board and others. You can usually get a good deal on a starter unit, which you can always use, even if you move up, at any of the large discounters such as Sam's, Costco, etc. One of former active participants moved his starter unit into his office!
