A lot of the time a specific place gives a grape certain characteristics that it is unlikely to achieve elsewhere, which is one reason many wines are named after the place they come from rather than their grape.

For instance, Vouvray tends to have a lot more of a minerally and sometimes honeyed character than much Chenin from elsewhere.
