Really new newbie ???

First post of what will prove to be many. I've been a person who has tried to experience all that the world has to offer and am just now getting into wines. What would you be a well rounded "starter" selection of 10 - 12 wines under $50.00/ bottle? I'm sure this question has been asked a million times, so if someone could point me to a previous thread, I'd be happy to start reading.
