which wine to choose...

I know that they drink wine on occassion, and her dad gets some kind of wine magazine. From what she's told me her mom usually just goes to the liquor store and gets a recommendation from whoever's working there at the time. They're interested in taste over price, so it doesn't have to be something flashy as long as it tastes good. I will be staying there for a few days, but we won't be having a meal at their house because of a busy schedule (parties, family events, etc.) so I don't really have much to go on in the way of food. Thanks for all your helpful suggestions so far, and if this information gives anyone further ideas feel free to post!
