I would try Sauvignon Blanc for white and Pinot Noir for red.

I would, however, stay away from New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc (not really representative of the grape).

The SB should have nice grapefruit flavors and the Pinot should taste like fresh cherries.

You can get a bottle of each for less than $15.00.
