Hi Kilt, and welcome to the Wine Board. I moved up from Ecco Domani to Collio Merlot. Collio is a small region in the extreme northeast part of Italy smack against the Slovenian border. The merlot vines there date back to the beginning of the 20th Century. The region is small enough that one can say that there is special terroir in at least most of the vineyards. The age of the vines and the special dirt, climate, orientation (things going into terroir) give the merlot wines from the region two more dimensions to what can be a singularly dimensional grape. Look for Bortoluzzi, Collio, Merlot as a specially good one. However, I have had seven or eight Collio Merlots, and they were all wonderful.
