I second the Beaujolais and riesling suggestions. You might ask for a Mosel Spatlese wine such as Wehlener Sonnenuhr or Urziger Wurzgarten. Leitz Rudesheimer Drachenstein is another pleasant German wine (inexpensive) if you can find it. Vouvray is a French wine from the Loire Valley that can be off dry (semi sweet). It's from the Chenin Blanc grape. Barton & Guestier, DuBoeuf, Jadot, and other French importers sell a Vouvray.
