Your retailer is likely to be more reliable than a wine club. I don't understand why you'd rather be surprised instead of tasting first and deciding for yourself what it is that you like.

As you've already discovered, unless they are associated with wineries, the majority of wine clubs mainly dump underachieving wines on the public, and not at underachiever prices either. You are being less surprised and more taken for a ride.
