I suspect it's part distance and expense, and partly that there's no clear image in most peoples minds as to what/where Australian wine country is. They haven't done a very good job of creating a "Bordeaux" or "Napa Valley" type image for any one or more growing area to be used as a tourist attraction.

As the wines become ever more popular, that situation should begin to change.
