If you get to La Jolla (quite a jaunt if you don't rent a car), I would recommend Tapenades Restaurant. Wonderful appetisers and entrees and good wine list. (Some of their "small dishes" are quite reasonably priced but by the time you add up two or three courses and wine it can get expensive).
Also really enjoyed a lunch in La Jolla at Crab Catcher on a main drag with a view of the bay. Both excellent meals.
