Mr. D, did I miss something? Nowhere in the long or short answers do I recall a definitve claim as to the grape's natural origin. Does anyone claim to know?

There is a belief that Catawba hails from North Carolina, I think. And then there is a belief that it is a field hybrid that is a natural cross between vitis vinifera and, possibly, vitis rotundifolia. Does that place rotun's origins in the Carolinas? Any information on this?
