Today was one of those days that make me remember why I love kids. We got hit with what's been termed a "mini nor'easter" that has brought us a fair amount of snow. I don't have to tell you what snow does to 8 year-olds. It was hard to keep focused on lessons. Finally around 1:45 I bagged the social studies lesson I had planned, pulled the blinds all the way to the top of the windows, passed out blue paper and white chalk and said, "Draw!" They were delighted, of course. Spontaneous singing of "Jingle Bells" ensued. In the midst of it all I overheard someone remark that Otto, a little boy from Cuba, had never experienced snow. I'd forgotten that he'd moved here over the summer. I said, "Otto! Get your coat on! Go outside!" The rest of the class watched from the window as Otto went running out the door, promptly slipped and fell on his butt, then caught snowflakes on his tongue, threw his first snowball and twirled around in delight. It was definitely a Kodak moment. It's really refreshing to see things through a child's eyes.
