Used to live in Livermore in the East Bay. There are over 40 wineries there, and, granted, they don't all have the cachet of Napa or Sonoma, but they do produce some very nice wines. Mileage from other places are: Napa-60, Santa Rosa-90, San Francisco-45, Monterey-95. Distances aren't like upstate NY because there are freeways and you can get up some decent speed. It used to take me about 45 mins to Napa, but never more than about an hour with heavy traffic. Prices are considerably cheaper than in most other places also, particularly now.
