A long time ago (try 40 years) I saw Germans enjoying steak with sweet and very full Riesling, and admittedly did it too. I understand you would never see that there today, and can't recommend you try it in Oregon. A nice lower price Washington Merlot would be a good choice, e.g. Columbia Crest Grande Estate.
