I got inspired by giving Dan music pointers and somehow found myself in Tower Records buying MORE CDs when I already own over 5,000....

My vote for instrumental record of the year:

Derek Trucks (nephew of Butch Trucks, the drummer in the Allman Brothers) is ABSOLUTELY channelling Duane Allman's voice on slide guitar BUT using it to play Coltrane, Wayne Shorter and even Bob Marley songs with a slinky rhythm section, vibraphone and a flute player! Trancendental stuff...made the hair stand up on my neck. This is so good that the obligatory vocal blues track (with Greg Allman on vocals) is just a distraction when it would be a standout on another disc.

This was recorded almost four years ago yet has just been released and on a major label with some promotion at that (I discovered it at a listening station and you have to BUY those slots) so someone believes in the kid (who looks about 20). The promo people know what they are doing: They REALLY got my hackles up by claiming that "he doesn't just sound like Duane, he is BETTER than Duane as this disc will show" and I was ready to hate it but, this sounds like what Dawg would be doing today if he had not been killed so tragically. A natural extension of the jazzier side of the Allmans and with even more soul. I bought it (the hype and the CD) and will be evengalizing about it for a while....

Also, another hot Brasilian selection:

The debut of Cibelle (the vocalist on Suba's classic São Paolo Confessions disc) features a working fusion of classic bossa and batucada with the ultra cool soundscapes of Morchiba (who produced).

Cibelle Six Degrees 657036 1091-2
