The oldest custom related to wine, still remaining in some European quarters, is for the consumer to bring the container and have the retailer fill it at the pump or, more accurately, at the cask.

Originally, the system was to protect consumers from fraud -- they could see what they were getting.

This was being done with wine and beer in the early nineteen fifties, in my Brooklyn, NY Italian-American neighborhood.
