I don't get the "reality" of most of these shows. Survivor? Where's the reality in that? If you're shipwrecked, you seldom have guys following you around with cameras, number one, and almost never get guys in pressed khakis emerging from the bushes to offer you a night of beer and pizza. And a true castaway would KILL AND EAT anyone who showed up and tried to make him do an "immunity challenge"...not to mention that a real castaway, asked to vote somebody off the island, would vote themselves off first. I'd be fascinated by a show that just featured sixteen people surviving for two months on a deserted island, in cooperation with each other, facing down the real challenges and working at a social dynamic that didn't have the element of competition and deception involved. The whole concept of tribalism and mutual reliance is engrossing stuff. Why tart it up by appealing to our base instincts? All these shows, with the exception of American Idol - which is nothing more than an old-fashioned talent contest - baffle the hell out of me. If you really need to see how devious people can be, look around you at work, in your garden club, or in California (or any) politics. THERE'S your reality show.
