Let me recommend Laurel Glen vineyards '99 REDS. Bottle only says 'California Red Wine', it's a blend of old vine zinfandel, syrah, petite syrah, mourverde and grenache. Zin predominates, and with the zin, grenache and syrah(s) it's got spice for miles, nice long finish, great mouthfeel (not too hot, despite it's 13.5% alchohol). In short, it stands on it's own hind legs and says 'Go on, beat this for the money'. And that's hard to do. Priced about $8 locally, it goes very well with Mediterranean foods, grilled meats, anything a red wine ought to go with. Fans of Marietta Old Vine and Cline Cotes d' Oakley Rouge, take note. You're gonna like this.

Last and perhaps least...the corks amuse me. Every REDS cork has a picture of Mao or Lenin or some other famous commie printed on it along with a motto about REDS being the peoples choice. I hear, tho I haven't seen, that there used to be corks with J. Edgar Hoover saying 'go find them REDS'.

Tastes great, good price and boffo yucks in a bottle. What more can you ask?
