TNs: 98 Rhones

I posted these notes on the WS board, but thought some on this board might want to check out too. Actually, I'm trying to stimulate some Tasting Notes for the 1998 Rhones that I think are fantastic!

1998 St. Benoit Chateauneuf du Pape Grande Garde: Tasted this one immediately after uncorking. Very tight structure. Definitely needed time to show itself. After a few minutes and much swirling of the glass, she finally began to show herself. Not as much fruit or spices as the 98 Ch. Maucoil, this showed more tannin. I would wait a couple of years before trying again, but the potential is there. Needs time to integrate. You will enjoy it now, but I think I'll wait a few years before opening another...

1998 Chateau Des Tours Cotes du Rhone: Bought a bottle on the store recommendation.
A fantastic Rhone for 10 dollars! Very representative of Rhones, the wine has an irridescent ruby color that is a joy to gaze at before drinking. A light bouquet leads into a spicy and fruity experience with well balanced acidity and alcohol. I think this wine is ready to drink now, just give it an hour in the open bottle to reveal itself. Not as big or full as most of the 98 CdPs, it still provides the Rhone lover with the flavors he/she will be looking for...

1998 Chateau Maucoil Chateauneuf du Pape:
A fantastic drinking wine right now, I think it will only improve over the next few years. I sensed slight oak and a rich aroma of spice. A typical CdP ruby color (i.e. beautiful to the eye as light glistens through...). This wine is full-bodied and chewy, leaving a lasting impression in the mouth and throat. A little "hot" due to the high alcohol, but very balanced nonetheless. At $30, it is no bargain, but if you like CdPs, you'll really enjoy this one.
The Wine Spectator review says it is not available in the U.S., but I found two stores in the area that carry it.
