Bucko is right on, as usual. My own taste in German wines migrated from the Rheingau in the 70's when I lived there to the Rheinhesse in the '80's to the Mosel, where it has been happily ensconced near Bernkastel for at least a decade.
Jill, please do try one of the wines from the Mosel-Saar-Ruwer. Make it a Spatlese or Auslese, and enjoy it well-chilled with a fresh green salad and mild (non-spicey) dish of chicken, or a pasta-and-grilled-chicken salad. Your palate might also migrate to the Mosel.
